Juniperus spp., also called Juniper, is renowned in Central Asia for its antimicrobial properties. Traditionally, branches of plants within this genus are burned as incense within the home and the smoke is spread throughout the household. It is believed that the smoke released in the burning of this plant, called “Archa” colloquially in some parts of Central Asia, eliminated harmful microbes from the household. The ritual is often performed during holidays and when an illness is present in the household.
